Stop Waiting For Metrics

In the past teams had to wait for reports to find out what was going on within their organizations. Are projects on time? Are projects within budget?

Organizations use a variety of different tools (defect trackers, test trackers, code trackers, etc.) that are used by various teams to gather information and status on applications/projects . Once all the teams & stakeholders receive the metrics the data is either incorrect due to manual intervention, data was missed or incorrectly reported/pulled. Everyone will review the incorrect/out of date metrics but they have no value anymore.

The days of waiting for accurate reports and metrics are long gone. Business Intelligence dashboards that are implemented properly will allow everyone to see everything that is going on within their organization/project. BI dashboards should at a minimum have these items:

• Ability to pull in data automatically from all needed data sources. (defect tracking software, testing trackers, development tools, etc.)
• Ability to have data pulls/refreshes setup based on your needs (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly)
• Ability to aggregate the data so you can see what items correlate to others.
• Ability to drill up and drill down. If you see an alert on your dashboard you need to be able to drill down to the exact area.
• Ability to be notified before a project is going to be marked red. By having notification you can make proactive decisions to resolve issues before they become critical or out of hand.
• Ability to find underlying trends in the data. Dashboards can should positive and negative trends, which can help when trying to make decisions on current & future projects.
• Ability to show the same data/charts to everyone. The last thing you need is to have metrics tell different stories to different people, which will cause confusion and uninformed decisions.

In the end, metrics done incorrectly are not valuable and cannot be actionable.
